You have watched the tips. You have done the shadow swings in the hallway. You go out and hit a hundred serves, three times a week, thinking about your elbow position the whole time.

Here is the uncomfortable part: the problem was almost certainly never your effort. It was that nobody checked whether your body could physically do the movement you were rehearsing — and nobody told you what order to fix things in.

Below are the five reasons adult serves get stuck, drawn from a coaching breakdown by Toms Sutris, an ATP-certified serve performance coach with 10+ years of experience (Boundless Tennis), who works specifically with adult players rather than juniors.

Everything here applies to club players. If you are 14 and training six days a week, your body is solving these problems for you already. If you picked the game up at 35, it isn't.

1. Shadow swings train your understanding, not your serve

A shadow swing has no ball, no load and no clock. Your conscious mind has complete control, so of course you can hit every checkpoint perfectly. That is what makes it feel productive.

Add a ball and everything changes. Half your attention goes to tracking a moving object and timing contact. Your muscles now have to load and generate power — and under load, they don't replay the unloaded rehearsal. They fall back to the pattern you have repeated most often in the conditions you're actually in.

The simplest way to test the logic: if shadow swings built serves, nobody would need to book a court. You would do the work in your living room and show up with a weapon.

2. Your body may not physically allow the position you're chasing

Every serve tip assumes a body that can execute it. Pronation needs shoulder internal rotational strength. A deep racket drop and a clean acceleration phase need range of motion at the shoulder. The trophy position needs the strength to hold a loaded shape.

If those capacities aren't there, your body compensates — and the compensation is what you keep seeing on video and calling "bad technique."

For adults over 30 this step isn't optional. It is the foundation everything else gets built on, and most club players have never worked on it once.

A 30-second test you can do right now

Take your racket. Set up in the trophy position. Move the elbow across until you feel the stretch in your chest, and stop there. That point is your current physical limit, not a technique fault. If a coach tells you to get the elbow further round and it will not go, more serving and more shadow swinging won't move it. A resistance band will.

3. Hitting 100 serves is a test, not a training session

Ask most players what they've been doing about their pronation and the answer is the same: serving a basket of balls, three times a week, thinking hard about the fix.

The full-motion serve is where you find out whether the work stuck. It is not the mechanism that makes it stick. Repeating a whole complex movement while trying to consciously edit one piece of it mostly rehearses the pattern you already have.

What works instead is drill progressions: isolate one technical piece, perform it correctly in a simplified setting until it feels a certain way, then take that feeling into the full motion. Film yourself once and you'll see why this matters — the picture in your head and the picture on the camera are rarely the same serve.

4. You're thinking in angles when you should be chasing a feeling

Forty-five degrees here. Elbow there. Racket face like this. The moment you serve to a checklist, you tighten up, and a tight serve is an inconsistent serve.

Worse, it doesn't survive contact with a match. The second the score matters and you stop consciously managing the positions, the whole construction collapses.

A feeling is different. A feeling you can reproduce under pressure without narrating it to yourself. That is the entire point of drilling a piece in isolation: not to learn the shape, but to learn what the shape feels like.

5. You're adding power before you have control

The serve is made of parts that do different jobs. The trophy position loads. The acceleration phase supplies speed. Pronation gives you control and placement.

Build them in the wrong order and they never fuse into one smooth serve. Speed you can't direct isn't a weapon, it's a double fault with better numbers. As the analogy goes, you'll only sprint as fast as you know you can stop.

FIRST Shoulder rotational strength and pronation. Racket in front, toss, feel the shoulder rotate — the goal is the sensation of full internal rotation, nothing else.
THEN Once racket control and pronation are reliable from the baseline, the upward throwing mechanics and the acceleration phase.
LAST The leg drive. Legs add energy to the shot, and there is no point feeding more energy into mechanics that can't channel it yet.

One part of step one that almost nobody checks

Steps one through five are training problems, and training is the only thing that solves them. No piece of equipment builds shoulder rotation or rewires a motor pattern.

But there is a detail sitting underneath all of it. Free shoulder rotation and clean pronation require a relaxed hand and a relaxed arm — it is the most repeated instruction in adult coaching for a reason. And a lot of players genuinely cannot follow it.

The reason is mechanical, not mental. Relax the hand and the handle turns slightly during the motion, so you arrive at contact in a grip you never chose. The instinctive correction is to squeeze harder, which locks the forearm, kills the rotation you've been training, and leaves the arm aching afterwards. Tighten, slip, tighten again.

Are shadow swings completely useless?

They have one job: showing you whether you understand the movement. That is worth something early on. What they can't do is build the strength or range of motion the movement needs, and they can't rewire what your body does under load — because there is no load. Treat them as a comprehension check, not as training.

How long before my serve actually changes?

It depends on which step you're stuck on. A range-of-motion limitation takes weeks of consistent band work before it shows up in the full motion. A technical pattern that your body is already capable of can shift in a handful of well-structured sessions. What doesn't work is chasing all of it at once.

Do I need a gym for step one?

No. A single resistance band covers most of it — shoulder rotational strength, stability work, end-range work for the racket drop, and resisted mimics of the serve motion. The specific exercises depend on your own limitations, which is why a generic "three best drills" list rarely fits anyone properly.

I'm over 40. Is it too late to build a real serve?

No, but the sequence matters more than it does for a junior. Younger players accumulate the physical capacities through sheer volume of play. Adults usually have to build them on purpose, which is exactly why step one exists.

Where does equipment fit into all this?

Behind the training, not in front of it. No grip builds shoulder rotation. What a base grip can address is narrower: if you're being told to relax your hand and the racket won't stay where you put it, that's a mechanical problem sitting on top of a technical one. Fixing it is cheap and takes five minutes. Fixing the serve takes a season.
